Végépâté is something I've stumbled across in Canada and I fell absolutely in love with it! I typically used to use it for vegetarian sandwiches, but one day I was feeling daring and wondered how végépâté would taste like grilled as a burger patty. For a twist to your typical veggie burger, be sure to try this!

A Supreme Grilled Veggie Burger!

Hello! You’ve stumbled across this page because you’re looking for a veggie burger.

Veggie burgers are great! You can check out my beginner recipe for the Power Bean Burger to see how to make a delicious bean burger! The McAloo Tikki Burger is my take on my favourite McDonald’s India veggie burger. It’s a potato patty made with peas and carrots. Yum yum!

The thing is the Power Bean Burger is pan-fried, and the McAloo Tikki burger is shallow fried.

What about grilling though a veggie burger though?

Sadly, veggie burgers are known for crumbling apart and turning to mush. Because they’re so fragile, they’re usually not up to the task to be grilled.

Let’s change that with this burger!

This burger will indeed hold its shape and taste delicious, making it the perfect canvas to grill!

Let me tell you how this burger came to be.

So, I love végépâté! I discovered it when I was in Montreal with my uncle’s family, and he had some on hand. I decided to try it in a sandwich and it was so delicious! I was instantly hooked! I love the prominent potato taste in it.

Unfortunately, however, for a couple of years the grocery store I frequented did not have végépâté. It was a specialty item for me, and I’d only get it when I went to a larger store that had it.

The thing with végépâté is that it doesn’t last long (as a meat-based pâté wouldn’t either!), because there are no preservatives. I had half a package left, and I wasn’t sure what to do with it.

Then, the shiny light bulb over my head lit up. Idea!

I had some homemade burger buns, some veggies and cheese. As many of my recipes come to life, it came from me wanting to answer a question.

What if I formed the végépâté into a burger patty and grilled it? Can it be grilled? What would it taste like?

Mission successful! Or almost.

The taste was absolutely amazing! The grilled végépâté seriously had incredible flavours, so different from having it cold!

However, as I mentioned earlier, the issue with veggie burgers is that they tend not to grill well. Here’s my first attempt.

Maybe you can’t tell from the photo, but I know for a fact that the patty was starting to break as I was assembling the burger. It was just missing a little touch to really keep it in tact, and I’m going to show you exactly how to perfect this delicious grilled veggie burger. So keep on reading this post to find out more!

What is Végépâté?

Végépâté is what it sounds like. It’s a meat-free pâté made with different vegetables! I’m using a store-bought pâté from a brand called Fontaine Sante. According to the ingredient list, it has potatoes, carrots, flour, onions, and soy. This is what it looks like.

Végépâté is available in the “traditional” flavour, which is the one I’m describing and using, and the “country style” one. I prefer the traditional flavour, and that’s what I’ll be using here.

What if I Don’t Have Végépâté?

As I mentioned earlier, I didn’t have easy access to it for the longest time! I’ve seen it at Whole Foods, but I’m not sure if this is available at Whole Foods locations in the United States.

If you don’t have it, then I recommend substituting with any vegetarian or vegan “mince” of your choice, and then follow the recipe. I have not tried this product myself, but this simple Ground Round is something along the lines of what I would recommend.

If you’re not a vegetarian and are wondering… then let me give you a big warning!

WARNING

This will NOT work with a traditional meat-based pâté! No, no, please don’t try it! This végépâté has a very subtle flavour, which makes it an excellent blank canvas to form a patty and make it into a burger with toppings. Traditional meat-based pâté would have a very strong in flavour compared to this végépâté. Just enjoy it on its own with bread or toast!

Of course, you could always make your own végépâté, and I always encourage ambition in the kitchen! But if you’re looking for a quick vegetarian burger recipe, then making a végépâté from scratch will take some time! You could indeed prepare your pâté ahead of time and then continue on with the recipe.

I do want to make my own végépâté one day, and once I’ve experimented and made a perfect one, then I’ll be sure to share the recipe so you can try it yourself! In the meantime, you can find some amazing recipes online. But if you want to keep this recipe quick and easy, then follow the first suggestion and substitute the pâté with your favourite vegetable-based mince.

Can I Make the Patties Ahead of Time?

If you really feel like it’s necessary really. There is really no cooking involved in this patty. The pâté is already ready to eat, all we need to do is portion it out in to patties, roll it in oats and pat it down before grilling. If you are entertaining guests, it could be worthwhile to prepare the patties ahead of time. Use your own judgement call, this process should take no more than 10 minutes!
