Starbucks Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino Recipe

When it’s a hot summer day you really want to sip on a delicious cold drink, and in particular, I love it to be a coffee-based drink! Do you make a trip to Starbucks for a Frappuccino? You’re not alone! One of my favourite parts of summer is the Frappuccino! Of course you get them all year long, and while I don’t mind having cold drinks when it’s cold outside (it’s called running home to have your beverage comfortably inside), there’s something just a little extra satisfying when you’re melting outside and you enjoy this chilled beverage, wouldn’t you agree?

As I mention in my Make Cooking Fun! free guide to get you motivated to cook up (or in this case, blend up!) new recipes, going out can inspire you to try your favourite treats at home! Not only will you save money, but you can enjoy the drink from the comfort of your pyjamas since you won’t have to go leave the house! If there’s a Frappuccino lover in your home, then you can put your heart in a cup with this Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino recipe as part of your one-month Live to Cook! You can get all of these motivational resources for free by signing up to my newsletter, plus all of my new recipes will be sent right to your inbox!

What is a Frappuccino?

A Frappuccino is a blended coffee or non-coffee (“creme”-based) drink that is frosty and thick. The main ingredients are milk, ice, sweetener, and it’s topped with whipped cream! Starbucks has many varieties of both coffee-based and creme-based Frappuccinos on their menu, and they’re always a hit! You can have chocolate, caramel, vanilla, chai, espresso and coffee-based Frappuccinos, and even strawberry! Seasonally, you can get pumpkin spice Frappuccinos and peppermint! To be honest, I’ve only really had the chocolatey-based varieties because chocolate-anything is my favourite, but I’ve tried pumpkin spice and caramel ribbon crunch to taste test for the recipes that are here on the blog! I’m thinking of doing the vanilla bean Frappuccino next. Comment below if you’re interested in seeing this one!

Now, the Mocha Cookie Crumble is actually my favourite Frappuccino blended beverage at Starbucks, and it has been ever since I came to Canada and had my first Frappuccino in either 2013 or 2014. It turns it out that the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino used to only be a seasonal beverage for summer, but based on the high demand, it’s available all year long.

Why You’lL Love Homemade Mocha Cookie Crumble Frapuccino!

  • Easy to make: The whole process is really easy to make! If you already have your chocolate sauce and vanilla syrup ready to go, then you’re honestly just brewing some coffee and blending!

  • Basic ingredients: No niche ingredients are used here, especially if you’re making most of the components from scratch! You should already have everything already available to you in your pantry and fridge!

  • Budget-friendly: At the time of writing this post, this drink in a grande (16 fluid ounce) size costs $6.45, and that’s $7.30 with tax! Isn’t that insane? I remember thinking $5 was a lot before the mass inflation! Of course I’ll still splurge sometimes, but when you see how fast it is to make your own Frappuccino, then you’ll realize it takes just as long to blend and serve as it would probably take you to go to the store! Plus, the net cost of all ingredients should only add up to a dollar or so!

  • Customizable: Check out later on in this post how you can make your Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino your very own to suit your preferences!

  • Decadent and chocolatey: I find this recipe better than the Starbucks drink, and I love the Starbucks’ version a lot! When I sipped them one after the other, I found that the Starbucks version is much sweeter! Maybe when I’ve got a clean palette I can enjoy the Starbucks version, but I find I take way longer to drink it because it is so sweet. Mine was much milder and focused more on the mocha and chocolate flavours!

What is in The Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino?

This is Starbucks’ definition of the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino:

Frappuccino® Roast coffee, mocha sauce and Frappuccino® chips blended with milk and ice, layered on top of whipped cream and chocolate cookie crumble and topped with vanilla whipped cream, mocha drizzle and even more chocolate cookie crumble. Each sip is as good as the last . . . all the way to the end.

Maybe you haven’t realized it, but this drink has whipped cream on the top AND on the bottom! For cream lovers like me… well, that’s just divine!

However, I learned from this reddit thread that Starbucks used to make the drink a bit differently. Back in 2013-2014, when the drink was seasonal, the whipped cream used to be chocolate and there used to be vanilla syrup in it! You’ll see soon in this recipe that I’m actually going to use the best of both worlds for my recipe. I’ll keep the whipped cream on the top and bottom like it currently is, but I’m going to add in vanilla syrup for sweetness and I’m going to use homemade chocolate whipped cream. Yum!

Now let’s see what the ingredient list for this drink is:

ICE, MILK, COFFEE FRAPPUCCINO SYRUP [SUGAR, WATER, NATURAL FLAVOR, SALT, XANTHAN GUM, POTASSIUM SORBATE, CITRIC ACID], WHIPPED CREAM [CREAM (CREAM, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, CARAGEENAN), VANILLA SYRUP (SUGAR, WATER, NATURAL FLAVORS, POTASSIUM SORBATE, CITRIC ACID)], COFFEE, MOCHA SAUCE [WATER, SUGAR, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, NATURAL FLAVOR], FRAPPUCCINO CHIPS [CONFECTIONERY COATING (SUGAR, PALM KERNEL AND PALM OILS, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, SOY LECITHIN, VANILLA, MILK), COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, 9%), COOKIE CRUMBS (UNBLEACHED UNENRICHED WHEAT FLOUR, SUGAR, PALM AND PALM KERNEL OIL, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, CHOCOLATE MASS, SALT, SODIUM BICARBONATE, SOY LECITHIN, NATURAL FLAVOR), CHOCOLATE MASS (2%), AND SALT], CHOCOLATE COOKIE GRIND TOPPING [SUGAR, ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), PALM AND PALM KERNEL OIL, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, SALT, SODIUM BICARBONATE, SOY LECITHIN, NATURAL FLAVOR]

It’s a long one for sure! We will try to keep ours as short as possible, and this will be assisted by preparing our own chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and vanilla syrup.

Is there Caffeine in the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino?

Yes, this frappuccino recipe contains caffeine. You’ll notice that if you order the Mocha Cookie Crumble in the Starbucks app, by default the recipe contains “3 Frappuccino® Roast pump(s)” for a grande size drink (16 fluid ounces). This contains 95 mg of caffeine. You can add espresso shots if desired and increase the number of “Frappuccino roast” pumps in your drink for more or less caffeine.

At Starbucks, the decaf version of this drink is known as the “Chocolate Cookie Crumble Creme Frappuccino,” which is the same drink just without the added coffee.

If you want to make the “creme frappuccino” recipe at home, simply don’t add any espresso or brewed coffee to the drink!

Tools Needed For Starbucks Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino

Ingredients for Mocha Cookie Crumble Frapp

Time to review the ingredients we’ll need to make the best Starbucks Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino at home! I’ll show what you need to make the chocolate sauce and vanilla syrup if you decide to make these, but if you want more details on how to prepare these in addition to your very own Chocolate Whipped Cream, then be sure to check out those recipes! All ingredient quantities and the complete recipe are available to save for later by checking out the FULL PRINTABLE RECIPE CARD at the bottom of this post! You can also scale the recipe based on how many Frappuccinos you want to make! This will yield one grande by default.

For the Chocolate Sauce

For the Quick Vanilla Syrup for Coffee

For the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino

  • Ice cubes: You need ice for this drink! The quantity does matter because you don’t want it to be too liquidy like a smoothie, and you want just the right amount of chunkiness. However, you don’t want it too chunky either like a slushie. Crushed ice or ice cubes are both fine.

  • Milk: In spirit of the default recipe and my personal preference, I’m using whole cow’s milk. Use a lower fat milk if you want.

  • Whipped cream: Based on the early versions of the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino, I’m going all out and I’m using my Homemade Chocolate Whipped Cream! While I’ve never seen it myself, I did a quick Google search and it seems Hershey’s sells a chocolate whipped cream in an aerosol can if you don’t want to make it yourself, though I do recommend homemade!

  • Oreo cookies: Use regular Oreos to mimic the type of cookie crumble that Starbucks uses. You can also use gluten-free Oreos if you’re making this for someone who has a gluten intolerance.

  • Chocolate chunks: You’ll see in the recipe that 3 scoops of “Java chips” are added to the drink. I’m not quite sure what exactly these are, but it seems like they’re chocolate chunks, so let’s just go with that! These are added to the blender.

  • Chocolate syrup: I’m basing this chocolate sauce off of my Cafe Mocha Chocolate Syrup Recipe without the added instant coffee. It’s super simple to make! You will add your chocolate syrup in the blender, at the bottom of the cup, and the top of the cup.

  • Coffee: You can brew your favourite coffee using a French press for a stronger flavour. Otherwise, a standard coffee machine will work just fine. If you have an espresso machine, then by all means go for it!

  • Sweetener: You’ll see if you order the Frappuccino online that the drink actually isn’t sweetened with any syrup. However, in the Reddit thread I found discussing the first iteration of the drink, vanilla syrup used to be added to the drink. At the time of writing this, there’s no syrup to sweeten the drink. I first tested the drink without extra sweetener, but I found that it did need some. In spirit of the original recipe, I’ve whipped up my Quick Vanilla Syrup for Coffee. You can buy one if you want or if you don’t want to use any vanilla syrup then don’t worry! Table sugar will be perfectly fine for the drink, or you can choose brown sugar, honey, cane sugar, agave syrup or maple syrup for natural sweetener options. You can also use Splenda or Stevia for sugar-free options.

How to make Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino

In a blender/food processor add the milk, coffee, chocolate chunks, oreos, vanilla syrup and chocolate sauce.

Blend well on low-medium speed until the ice is completely crushed. Ensure the blender is not running to fast to ensure there are still tiny pieces of cookie and ice to keep the drink frosty.

Portion half the chocolate whipped cream at the bottom of your serving glass, add a drizzle of chocolate sauce and then pour the blended Frappuccino drink.

Top with more whipped cream, drizzle chocolate sauce and add a sprinkle of crushed oreos.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

TIPS FOR A Mocha Cookie Crumble Frapp That’s better than Starbucks!

  • The amount of ice is important to consider to get the right final consistency in the drink.

  • Avoiding over-blending the drink to prevent excessive foam. If you do get extra foam due to blending, you can spoon that out.

  • Blend at Low to Medium-Low speed to ensure there are still small pieces of ice and cookie in the drink. The texture should essentially be crushed, like a frappuccino should be.

  • Using a whipped cream dispenser to add the whipped cream will help give an authentic experience since the cream will be topped just like at starbucks and will have a very similar taste and texture.

  • Serve it right away to get the complete experience of the drink with the frozen bits of ice.

Variations of Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino

  • Milk: You can use a dairy-free milk if you want. My recommendations would be coconut milk and soy milk. People say that oat milk is good for coffee, but I personally don’t like the taste of it… The “oat”ness of the drink is too strong for me! If you really want to make this drink special, you could make it using your own Homemade Almond Milk!

  • More chocolate: Throw in some cocoa powder in the blender!

  • Whipped cream: You can use my regular whipped cream recipe make your own if you want to follow the current Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino recipe. If you want this drink to be plant-based, then use a coconut whipped cream topping.

  • Oreo: I used standard Oreo cookies to best replicate the cookie bits in the Starbucks recipe. However, if you want to have some fun, you can experiment with different Oreo flavours! Try out golden if you want some vanilla flavour, or even one of the more exciting Oreos like birthday cake or cinnamon bun! The flavour of the cream inside the Oreo won’t really matter since we’re going to be grinding these anyway, but a flavoured cookie can really switch things up!

  • Sauce: If you want some caramel goodness to complement the chocolate here, then you can replace the chocolate sauce with some Simple Caramel Sauce. For an adult-style Frappuccino, then you could go for my Coffee Whiskey Caramel Sauce to give you everything - mocha, caramel, and some booze! Want to enjoy fall goodness with chocolate? Then you could experiment with my Pumpkin Spice Sauce.

  • Syrup: If you want some more flavour going into your Frappuccino, you could try my Brown Sugar Syrup! Here are some other options that are store-bought you may want to experiment with:

What to Serve with Starbucks Mocha Cookie Crumble Frapp

To be honest, this drink is quite hefty on its own and could really be its own dessert! You may not have the appetite to have anything with it and just enjoy this as a snack.

However, if you have a super crazy sweet tooth or just really love chocolate, then you could certainly pair it with brownies, such as my Gluten-Free Banana Fudgy Brownies or Espresso Brownies with Peppermint Mocha Cream for more coffee flavour! If you want to balance this out as part of a savoury breakfast, try it with a Homemade Sausage McMuffin, Tim Horton’s Farmer’s Wrap, or simply some Mashed Avocado Toast with Fried Egg!
