Versatile: How can you possibly NOT use chocolate sauce? I’ve got plenty of ideas for you listed below, so you may end up using this Chocolate Sauce daily in all of your favourite goodies!
WHat’s the Difference between Chocolate Sauce and Chocolate Syrup?
If you’ve seen my Cafe Mocha Syrup for Coffee recipe compared to this Chocolate Sauce recipe, you may be wondering what is the difference! The Cafe Mocha Syrup recipe is made by melting chocolate chips and combining heavy cream with sugar. This gives you a very rich and high quality chocolate flavour, and the syrup is very thick. On the other hand, this Chocolate Sauce is on the thinner side, and you don’t have as rich of a flavour. It’s more pourable than the Cafe Mocha Syrup, where in that case you may want to use a squeeze bottle to get the precise application over your treats.
What Type of Cocoa Powder Should I use?
There are actually 8 types of cocoa powder, but two main ones that are used for baking and cooking: Dutch-processed cocoa powder and natural cocoa powder. I’ve made a YouTube video comparing the difference between using Dutch-processed cocoa powder versus natural cocoa powder in the context of baking brownies, and there was a significant difference between the two! I won’t spoil which one I preferred, but the results definitely speak for themselves in the video!
However, for the purpose of making a chocolate sauce, you can use whichever cocoa powder you want. As I describe in my free motivational guide to explore your potential in the kitchen, Make Cooking Fun!!, if there is a suitable ingredient that you already have on hand, there is no point about stressing stress to run to the store to get the exact ingredient! Whatever cocoa powder you’ve got will work just fine - and even cacao powder can work! Just be mindful that results will vary slightly based on the exact powder you’re using. I used natural unsweetened cocoa powder for a milder flavour.
How Do I Use Chocolate Sauce?
You can really do whatever you want with this Chocolate Sauce recipe! There are so many ways to enjoy some chocolate sauce, but I’ll just give a handful of ideas!
In coffee: Add this at the bottom of your glass or top it over cold foam or whipped cream! I made this chocolate sauce specifically for my Iced Chocolate Latte recipe!
Cold drinks: Switch up your Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino with this chocolate sauce, or add it to your Banana Mocha Frappe! You could even add a chocolatey touch to your Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso!
Ice cream: Spoon some over your vanilla ice cream or even chocolate ice cream if you can’t get enough chocolate!
For hot drinks: Just add this to some steamed milk and you’ve got an amazing hot cocoa! You can also add this to other hot drinks where you would like some more chocolate, such as Nutella Hot Chocolate or S’mores Hot Chocolate.
In smoothies: Add the chocolate sauce in the blender with your other ingredients or top it off over the smoothie!
Desserts: You could switch up your Protein-Packed Chocolate Covered Rice Krispies Treats by adding a spoonful of chocolate sauce on the top or even mixed in with the rice krispies mix. Other amazing desserts where chocolate sauce would be perfect include Canadian Beavertails, Banana-Nutella Raspberry Galette, No-Bake Peanut Butter Pie, Gluten-Free Banana Fudgy Brownies or over Air Fryer Crescent Roll Baby Rolls.
On top of pancakes: This will add an amazing touch to any stack of pancakes! This would also be superb over some sweet crepes, including my Banana Strawberry Nutella Crepes!
In oatmeal: This Chocolate Sauce is excellent for stovetop oats or overnight oats!
On its own: It’s just so tasty I can’t resist getting a spoon and having a lick of it! Especially when I see the chocolate sauce just sitting there in my fridge, waiting for me to dig in!

Cocoa powder: For best results, use the highest quality cocoa powder you can find.
Sugar: Just granulated white sugar. Using powdered sugar may result in the sauce clumping up while simmering since powdered sugar can contain cornstarch, so it won’t dissolve to make a thick and smooth chocolate sauce.
Water: You need water to dissolve the cocoa powder and sugar! The amount of water you add will control how thick or thin the sauce is.
Vanilla extract: We add some vanilla extract once our chocolate sauce is off the heat to add some flavour! I can’t live without vanilla extract for my sweet recipes!
Salt: Sounds counterintuitive when making something sweet, but salt enhances the cocoa flavour and the sweetness from the sugar! Trust me, it will make a difference if you don’t add some!
