Oatmeal is such a wonderful breakfast in so many ways! You can have it hot or cold or even baked. The possibilities for oatmeal is simply endless! You can add whatever mix-ins you like, you can adapt them based on your mood and tastes. You can have an entirely different breakfast every morning even though you’d still be eating oatmeal! That’s very cool to me and I love playing around with oatmeal ideas. I like how you can make them healthy and a treat at the same time. I’d say this double chocolate hazelnut oatmeal recipe will definitely do the trick!
Why Try Double Chocolate Hazelnut Oatmeal?
Looking for a chocolaty start to your day? This hearty chocolate hazelnut oatmeal bowl is all chocolate, absolutely perfect to satisfy your sweet tooth! Made over the stove, these oats are warm and comforting for those cold winter days. These oats are double chocolate because we’ve got cocoa powder that’s cooked with the oats and milk, and we’re going to top the oatmeal off with your favourite chocolate hazelnut spread. I think a good chocolate hazelnut spread, particularly Nutella, is just a pleasure for everyone! I really can’t resist eating some with a spoon when I’ve got a fresh jar. It’s just too amazing to resist!
You can even make these oats triple chocolate if you add a scoop of chocolate protein powder! This will not only boost the protein content of your oatmeal, but it will add even more chocolate goodness for all the chocoholics out there, and I find that the protein powder makes oats even creamier. If you love creamy oats and want that extra nutritional boost, definitely incorporate some chocolate protein powder into this recipe!
We’re also going to be topping the oats with some chia seeds. Chia seeds will also boost the nutritional content of the oats because they’re rich in fibre and a good source of Omega-3’s. I think they add some extra texture on top and they’re quite tasty!
Ingredients for Double Chocolate Hazelnut Oatmeal
Just a few simple ingredients are what you’ll need for some delicious oats that will give you a Ferrero Rocher experience this morning! Let’s go over what we’ll need.
Milk
Optional: Chocolate protein powder (this will make the oats even more chocolaty and more thick!)
For topping
Hazelnuts, chopped
How to Make these Decadent Oats
All right, let’s get cooking! To get the hot chocolate flavours in an oatmeal, we’re first going to add the oats and milk to a pot and bring that to a simmer. Stir every 30 seconds or so to make sure the milk doesn’t get stuck to the pan.
As I usually do with my oats, I use dairy milk. You can use whatever milk you like, but you may not get the creaminess of a traditional chocolate. In that case, adjust the amount of milk and sweetness to achieve that classic hot cocoa feel to suit your dietary preferences.
Then, you’ll add your cocoa powder, vanilla extract and nutella and stir well. Once you’ve achieved the texture you’re looking for, take the oats off the heat. If you’re adding protein powder, whisk it in now (make sure to do this off the heat).
Otherwise, transfer the oats to a bowl and top with hazelnuts and Nutella, or your choice of chocolate hazelnut spread. Enjoy some hot cocoa in oatmeal on a chilly winter morning or whenever you feel like it!
